Dennis L. Denning, 76, of McGregor, Iowa, died Sunday October 19, 2008 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor following a long illness.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at First Congregational Church with burial at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor. Military honors were accorded at the cemetery.
He is survived by his wife Arlys of McGregor; three sons: Robyn (Cathy) Denning of McGregor, Dana (Gina) Denning of Aurora, Colo., Brent (Laurie) Denning of Cedar Falls, Iowa, eight grandchildren: Michelle (P.J.) Schmidt, Michael, Nicholas, Brittany, Kristen, Brad, Kyle, Taylor Denning, one great granddaughter Paige Schmidt; and one sister Virginia (Roger) Drahn of Monona, Iowa.
Dennis was born June 13, 1932 in Garnavillo, Iowa to Robert James and Inez Marie Vivian (Hessel) Denning. He graduated from McGregor High School in 1950 and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn.
He married Arlys Pagel on June 29, 1952 at the First Congregational Church in McGregor. He served in the Army from 1952 to 1954. Following his discharge he worked for the Prairie Spy in Prairie du Chien, Wis., from 1954 to 1970. He also repaired equipment on the Surge Route, did carpentry, and he and Arlys owned and operated a greenhouse. From 1970 until 1996 he taught career exploration, Co-op, basic electricity, graphic art, introduction to construction, and photography at MarMac High School. He was a member of the American Legion, city council, served as mayor, member of the Hook and Ladder, Pleasant Grove Cemetery board, McGregor Utility Board, and many boards at First Congregational Church. He was well known for his love of photography and his photographs are on display from near to far.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and two nephews, Rick and Dennis Drahn.
