Mary Leona Lange died Tuesday April 7, 2009 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, IA after a short illness.
Funeral services were held Monday April 13, 2009 at the Living Faith United Methodist Church' McGregor Center with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor, Iowa.
She was born on June 14, 1914 to Harry H. Metzger and Sylvia Lillian (Petrick) Metzger and grew up in the rural Cedar Rapids area. Leona was the oldest of six children: Sylvia Louise Metzger, John Vernon Metzger, Harry Dwayne Metzger, Kathryn Ileen Metzger and Glen Louis Metzger.
Leona attended a 9 week course at Coe College to become a teacher. Her first teaching job, at age 18, was at Rosehill School. Her first class consisted of 3 students of which two were her brothers. She taught from September 1932 to December 1934. Leona met Charles Bernard Lange (Chuck) in the summer of 1931 while she was babysitting for an aunt and Chuck would deliver groceries. Chuck and Leona were married December 1, 1934 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.
In 1945 Chuck and Leona moved from Cedar Rapids to McGregor and worked for Art Hinch at the Hinch Brothers Hardware. They purchased Hinch Brothers Hardware in 1946, renamed it “McGregor Hardware” and owned and operated it with sons Dennis and Roger. McGregor Hardware closed its doors in 2001.
Leona was active in her community and her church. She belonged to the Easter Star for 50 years, the Business and Professional Women’s Group, the Friendly Neighbors Card Club, the United Methodist Women’s Group, Church Choir and taught Sunday School for 45 years.
Leona was preceded in death by two sisters Louise Lockwood (1998), Kathryn Bowen (2008), two brothers Dwayne Metzger (1983), Glen Metzger (2005), husband Charles Bernard Lange (1968), sons David Allan Lange (1957) and Dennis Dean Lange (1969) and son-in-law Frank Davies Jr. (1994).
Leona is survived by a daughter M. Joyce (Frank) Davies Jr. of McGregor, son Charles Roger (Rita) Lange of McGregor, daughter-in-law Beverly Towle of McGregor, a brother John Metzger of Shellsburg, nine grandchildren: Cindy (Paul) Ericksen, Cathy (Robyn) Denning, Cari (Peter) Eggen, Christian (Michelle) Davies, Jeff Lange, David (Jennifer) Lange, Debra (Jim) McCluskey, Diane Reuter, Duane (Alissa) Lange, 22 great grandchildren: Caitlin (Mike) Adkins, Rebekah (Frank)Ramirez, Michelle (PJ) Schmidt, Michael Denning, Marina, Alex and Colton Eggen, Holly Howe, Charlie, Kenny, Benjamin and Nathaniel Lange, Ryan Lange, Britni, Kole and Connor George, Aden McCluskey, Justin, Stephanie and Sam Reuter, Jack and Ella Lange, and by two great-great grandchildren Blanca Ericksen and Paige Schmidt.
