James William (Pete) Starkey, born to James and Bessie (Knapp) Starkey on May 6, 1929, in Marquette, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved family on March 21, 2009.

James grew up in Iowa and graduated from Marquette High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1950-56. James married Ella Streittmatter on April 28, 1955. Together they moved to Washington in 1966.

An avid outdoorsman, James enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a gifted handyman and was a perfectionist when it came to his work. By trade, James was a heavy equipment operator and retired from the local coal mine.

James and Ella traveled in their R.V. and were “full-timers” for several years in Yuma, Arizona. James was a people-person and would always strike up a conversation with folks everywhere they went, resulting in many friendships. His family describes James as a wonderful, caring, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Surviving James are his wife, Ella, at the family home in Rochester, Wash.; his children, Debbie (Greg) Ferguson, Tenino, Wash.; Lynne Crossen and her partner, Marty Leonard, Olympia, Wash.; grandchildren Amanda Crossen, Olympia Wash.; Scott and Matthew Ferguson, Tenino, Wash., and his great-grandson, Kayden Ferguson, Tenino, Wash. Also his brother, Harry Starkey, Bucoda, Wash.; and sister Jean (Steve) DeLong, Rochester, Wash., and other family members and friends.

Preceding James in death were his parents, brothers Norman, Bob, Clifford and Dean Starkey and his sister Dora.

Services were held on March 31, 2009, at Sticklin Funeral Chapel, Centralia, Wash., with inurnment at Grand Mound Cemetery, Rochester, Wash.
