OBITUARY: 1963
Funeral services for Ervin Moritz were held Monday, Feb. 18, 1963, at the Peace United Church of Christ at 2 p.m. with the Rev. A.F. Volle officiating.
Burial was in the Clayton Center Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harvey Witte, Dr. M.T. Vincent, F.E. Sharp, Louis Kruse, Karl Stiehl, and William Lubbers.
Ervin William Moritz, son of Herman and Amelia Lange Moritz, was born June 18, 1898, at Luana, Iowa and died at the General Hospital in Prairie Du Chien, Wis., Friday, Feb. 15, 1963, following surgery, Monday, Feb. 11.
He was baptized March 14, 1901, and confirmed March 16, 1913, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Postville, and was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader since 1936.
Mr. Moritz was married to Hazel Lorntson at Galena, Ill, Sept. 8, 1918. (Marriage certificate lists 1919 as year of marriage.)
He farmed for 29 years, 15 years near Postville and 14 years northeast of Elkader. Because of ill health he went to Arizona for two years. He returned to northeast Iowa and worked as a carpenter and for the past six years served on the Elkader Police force.
Mr. Moritz was a member of the Elkader Masonic Lodge, No. 72, A.F and A.M., Royal Neighbors and the Peace Officers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, who died in infancy, and two sons, Homer in 1950 and Alan in 1953.
He is survived by his wife, and two daughters: Mrs. Ross (Lois) Powell, Annandale, Va., and Mrs. Malin (Dorothy) Schultz, Luana; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Bert (Amy) Crary, Madison, Wis. and Mrs. Melvin (Edna) Mitchell, LaGrange, Ill.; 4 brothers, William, Waukon, Harold and Milo, West Union and Felix, Monona.
Relatives who attended from a long distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Mitchell, LaGrange, Ill, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Crary, Sr., Delbert Knapp and Bertram Crary, Madison, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Homer Klotzbach, Appleton, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Runau, Iowa City; Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Moritz, Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs Julius Weist, Cassville, Wis,; Mrs. Carl Sweeney, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nichols, and Mrs. Rose Ann Williams, Lancaster, Wis.; Mrs. Pete Brinkman and Francis Adrian, Cassville, Wis. and Warren Klotzbach, Milwaukee.
