Matilda Martha Peters, daughter of Christian and Susan Peters, was born in Ashland county, Ohio, April 2, 1836, and passed away April 3, 1925, aged eighty-nine years and one day. In 1861 the family came as pioneers to Clayton county, Iowa, and located on a farm now owned by Wm. Pollock. In 1873 they moved to Cass county, Iowa. After the death of the father, the mother and daughter returned to Clayton county where the deceased and her mother made their home with her sisters, Mrs. Catherine Yearous and Mrs. Francis Robbins. In early life the deceased united with the church and all through life the Bible with its promises were a help to her. Especially during the closing days she often repeated the twenty-third Psalm and expressed the thought that soon the Savior was coming for her. Two characteristics stand out in the life of the deceased, the first that she always enjoyed the companionship and friendship of children and won their confidence, she was happy in serving them; the other was that she made herself contented in the different homes where she made her home and felt that she had a place in the circle. Services were held Sunday afternoon, April 5th in the Illyria church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Ernest J. Starr and burial was in the Illyria cemetery.
