Elkader - Elkader's oldest resident, Kathryn Dittmer, 91, widow of Martin Dittmer, died Monday in a Prairie du Chien, Wis., hospital, where she had been a patient for two weeks.

Mrs. Dittmer, the former Kathryn Dohrer, was born July 27, 1861, on a farm in Cox Creek township, eight miles south of Elkader. Her parents were of Prussian descent. She was married in 1881 in Elkader and had lived here ever since.

Mr. Dittmer, who died in 1914, was in the lumber business, later went into the automobile business and also served as sheriff of Clayton county for seven years.

Since her husband's death, Mrs. Dittmer had lived alone in the house which they had purchased in 1884. Surviving are two sons, L.D. Elkader, and W.C. Dittmer, Davenport. Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Peace Evangelical and Reformed church. Burial will be in the East Side cemetery. The body is at the Witt funeral home.

___________________________________________

Elkader - Funeral services for Mrs. Kathryn Dittmer, 91, Elkader's oldest resident who passed away Monday at a Prairie du Chien hospital, where she had been a patient for the past two weeks, were held today at 2 p.m. at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church in Elkader. The Rev. Paul Kitterer, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was made in the Eastside cemetery.

"Grandma" Dittmer, as she was familiarly called, was born July 27, 1861, on a farm near Elkader, and in 1881 she married Martin Dittmer. They made their home in Elkader from the time of their marriage, so Grandma Dittmer is truly an Elkader pioneer. She has lived in the same house since 1884.

Martin Dittmer, her husband, was actively engaged in the lumber and machine business from 1880 until his death in 1914. His two sons, W.C. Dittmer and L.D. Dittmer, took over the business at that time. The former moved to Davenport in 1943, but the latter is still in the automobile business here - so the name "Dittmer" has been associated with the business interests of Elkader since 1880.

Mrs. Dittmer is survived by her two sons and a brother, William Dohrer of Eagger, N.D.

Her husband, Martin Dittmer, was sheriff of Clayton county from 1900 to 1908.
