Koopman Boy, 11, Dies of Injuries
Dean Koopman, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardt Koopman, stumbled into a bonfire at his farm home Sunday evening about 8:00 p.m. and suffered severe burns. He passed away at Postville Hospital on Monday morning about 11:20.
Dean was playing in the yard with his brother Arvin and they were shooting bats with B-B guns when he slipped and fell face down in a bonfire. A neighbor rushed him to the Postville Hospital where he underwent treatment for third degree burns on his chest, arms, legs and face. Mr. and Mrs. Koopman were at the Postville high school attending baccalaureate services at the time of the accident.
Funeral services will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 21, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Walter T. Martin in charge.
Dean Donovan Koopman, son of Gerhard and Ellen Koopman was born at Clear Lake, Iowa, March 15, 1942. He passed away at the Community Hospital, Monday, May 18, 1953 at the age of 11 years.
Dean was in fifth grade at the Pixler school in Grand Meadow township. He attended Sunday School at the Community Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by: his parents; four sisters, Cora, Dixie and Geraldine at home and Mrs. John Wahls of Elkader; three brothers, Arvin, James at home and A/1c Louis H., who is stationed at Okinawa.
