John B. Leuchtenmacher was born in Wuertenberg, Germany, October 7, 1864, and passed away at his home in Elkader March 31, 1925, at the age of sixty years, five months and twenty-four days. He was baptized and confirmed in the German Evangelical church in Germany and received all of his education in the old country where he also learned the trade of knife-smith. He came to America in 1888 and settled in Highland township, Clayton county, Iowa. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Lindenbauer and to this union seven children were born, five boys and two girls, namely, Matthew, John, George, Roy and Philip here, Mrs. Dora Leuchtenmacher Emery of Des Moines, and Ada at home. His son, Matthew preceded him in death Dec. 27, 1917, at Camp Pike, Arkansas.
In the year 1921 he sold his farm, on account of ill health and moved to Elkader taking up his trade. On December 24, 1924, he underwent an operation for appendicitis and was feeling fairly well until he was stricken with heart failure a few hours before his death.
Besides his wife and children he leaves three sisters in Germany, six grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held from the late home Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and at 2:00 o'clock from the Evangelical church of which he was a member. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery with Rev. C.H. Franke, his pastor, officiating.
