Arthur Noble Nelson

Arthur Noble Nelson, son of John and Isabell (Nelson) Nelson, was born December 3, 1899 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, east of Clermont, Iowa. He died Saturday, April 13, 1996 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa. He was 96 years old.

He attended the rural country schools near his home. On January 20, 1921 he was married to Nora Anderson at Osage, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Noraine Janet, who died in infancy, Mary Ann and Arthur.

Following their marriage, Art worked at the brick factory in Clermont, and then the couple moved to Osage, where he worked in a greenhouse. In 1928 Art was employed by the Larrabee family at Montauk where he worked for 45 years. He began as the family chauffeur and then became the groundskeeper for the Larrabee estate. After the death of his wife, Nora, Arthur married her sister, Olga Anderson Turner on January 1, 1973. Following his retirement, Art lived in Clermont and then became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah in November 1985. Arthur was a member of the West Clermont Lutheran Church and the West Clermont Brotherhood. When he had time, Art loved hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nora Anderson who died in 1969; his wife, Olga who died in 1987; an infant daughter, Noraine Janet; a son, Arthur Norman Nelson; two brothers, Will and Joe Nelson and three sisters, Edna Nelson, Nora (Mrs. Ted Loftsgard) and Rose (Mrs. Fred Mauer).

Surviving is his daughter, Mary Ann and husband, Dean Schultz of Monona, a daughter-in-law, Yvonne (Mrs. Richard Franks) of Cresco; nine grandchildren, Barbara Savidge, David Schultz, LuAnn Wachsmuth, Tim Schultz, Kathy Rear, Gary Nelson, Karen Amundson, Lynn Nelson, Jim Nelson, 16 great-grandchildren, Dawn, Laurie and Erin Savidge, Kara, Anna, Abbie and Ali Schultz, Kelly and Caleb Wachsmuth, Dan and David Nelson, Tim and Alec Amundson, Michael Nelson, Bryan and Katie Rear; two brothers, Millard Nelson, Sr., and his wife Myrtle of Clermont, and Elmer Nelson and his wife, Ruth of Cochran, Wis. and three sisters, Amy Reid of Huxley, Ethel Wilbur and her husband, Albert, and Irene Wolfs, all of West Union, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 16, 1996 at the West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa. The Reverend Joseph Nesheim officiated. The organist was Lois Dummermuth. Casket bearers were Millard Nelson, Jr., Jim Nelson, Henry Nelson, David Schultz, Gary Nelson, Tim Schultz and Wayne Wachsmuth. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Gods Acre Cemetery.
