Valdine Alice Nelson

Funeral services for Valdine Nelson were held Monday, March 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the West Clermont Lutheran Church at Clermont. The Rev. Donald Loots officiated. Arthur Amundson provided the special music, accompanied by Patricia Butikofer, organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Marion Lutheran Cemetery at Gunder.

Valdine Alice Nelson, daughter of Wettle T. and Lena (Alsaker) Wettleson, was born Nov. 9, 1899 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, IA. She died Thursday, March 14, 1991 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville.

She was baptized December 26, 1899 in the Marion Lutheran Church by the Rev. Ole Waldeland and confirmed there May 24, 1914 by the Rev. Nils Arveson. She attended the McNeil School in Grand Meadow Township, graduated from the Elkader High School and attended the University of Iowa.

On May 12, 1920 she married Martin Nelson at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. Rev. Nils Arveson was the officiating clergyman. They raised a foster daughter, Elsie Lindgren.

The couple owned and operated several retail stores during their lifetime, including the grocery store in Gunder, which burned in 1926, and the "Double Store" in Clermont. They lived in Postville, Melbourne, Anamosa, Arlington and Manchester, Iowa, returning to Clermont in 1968.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Martin, who died in 1975, 2 brothers Theodore and Robert, 3 sisters, Gunille (Mrs. Harold Opsand), Julia Wettleson and Lillie (Mrs. Arthur Solberg).

Surviving is a foster daughter, Elsie Gangstad of Oakridge, OR, 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, a sister Christine Rypestol (Mrs. Marcus) of St. Olaf, IA and nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the West Clermont Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA. She taught in the public school as well as Sunday School and sang in church choirs. She was also a member of the Clermont Study Club, the Clermont Town Ladies Aid, the Clermont Historical Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Casket bearers: Jeffrey Wettleson, David Amundson, Randy Schnuelle, Marcus Wettleson, Harold Hanson and Albert Hanson.
