Kathryn Lou Crary Leuchtenmacher was born July 16, 1930 in St. Olaf, the daughter of Arthur and Catherine (Stence) Crary. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader and attended rural Clayton County elementary schools and Elkader High School.
July 19, 1948 she married Floyd William Leuchtenmacher at the St. Joseph's Rectory in Elkader. Kathryn and Floyd farmed together on "Chicken Ridge" near Elkader, operating a dairy herd and raising chickens, hogs and grain. They left the farm in 1968 and lived in Waukon and LuVerne for a few years before returning to Elkader, where Floyd managed and Kathryn worked in the kitchen at the Clayton County Care Facility. When Floyd died in 1974, Kathryn moved back to Waukon and worked at Wapsie Produce in Decorah and managed the Eighth Street Apartments. She also did some babysitting and was a care giver to several area elderly.
Kathryn enjoyed taking walks and reading, especially local Iowa stories. She liked to play games and work puzzles and loved spending time with and caring for her grandchildren.
Survivors include three children, Kenneth Floyd (Juleann VanBelle) Leuchtenmacher of Martha's Vinyard, MA, Maxine (Steve) Grotegut of Waukon, and Floyd Leuchtenmacher, Jr. of Lansing; and four grandchildren, Andrea, Bryce and Brenna Grotegut and Renae Leuchtenmacher. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; and a brother, Edward Crary.
Casketbearers are Bryce Grotegut, Cory Root, Dane Regan and Fred Smith.
