Sharon E. Smith, 67, of Dubuque passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 12 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Dubuque.
Sharon was born January 4, 1942 to Edgar and Marie Pensel in Guttenberg. She was raised on a farm near Colesburg and graduated from Colesburg High School. Sharon earned a bachelor of arts degree from Coe College of Cedar Rapids and a Master of Arts degree in education from the University of Platteville, WI.
A dedicated and loving wife, mother and educator, Sharon made a tremendous impact on the lives of those who knew her. She taught reading at Neal Wilkins Elementary School in Platteville, WI and prior to that she had taught preschool. In 1993, Dubuque's Telegraph Herald newspaper recognized her as one of the tri-state's great teachers.
Additionally, Sharon taught Sunday school and Bible school in various congregations and volunteered in a number of capacities in the communities in which she lived. Sharon loved spending time with family and friends, reading, traveling and visiting their cabin on the Mississippi River. She was well loved and will be profoundly missed.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Burnell Smith; daughters Kathleen (David) Phelan of Waukesha, WI and Laura (William) Gentry of McGregor; two grandchildren, Erin and Michael Phelan; brothers Wallace Pensel of Dubuque and Kermit Pensel of Guttenberg; uncles Arthur Handke and Donald Dodge of Edgewood; 11 nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and the Lupus Foundation of America.
