Services at McGregor for Lawrence Thiele
McGregor - Services for Pfc. Lawrence Thiele, killed in a railroad accident in Belgium April 11, 1945, were conducted Friday at St. Patrick's church in Monona. Pfc. Thiele, who lived in McGregor five years before entering the service, served in a railroad battalion with Patton's Third army in France and Germany. At the time of his death he was head brakeman of an operating battalion in Belgium. Born August 25, 1914, in Richland Center, Wis., he was graduated from Monona high school. He was married to Helen Kinley of Harper's Ferry in August, 1938. He entered the army Sept. 29, 1943.

News of the death of Pfc. Lawrence C. Thiele, 30, on April 11, in action in Belgium, reached his wife last week.
Memorial services will be held for him at 10 a.m., April 27, in St. Mary's Catholic church, McGregor.
His wife believes that his death may have been due to a Nazi robot bomb explosion as his recent letter had described an attack on their area by robots, and the tent headquarters had been destroyed two days previous to his letter, while he was outside the vicinity.
He entered service in the army Sept. 29, 1943. He was sent oveseas about a year later with the 732nd railroad battalion and was in service with General Patton's Third army in France and Germany until recently when he was transferred to the 743rd railroad operating battalion and sent to Belgium.
Before entering service he was employed by the Hagen and Vick store in McGregor. He was born at Richland Center, Wis., Aug. 25, 1914, and lived there until is family moved to Monona, where he was graduated from high school. His marriage to Miss Helen Kinley of Harper's Ferry was in August 1938. Mrs. Thiele is employed in the First State Savings bank at McGregor. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Thiele and one brother Clifford, all of St. Paul, also survive him.
