L.J. Molumby Dies at Ranch in Bynum Area

Great Falls, Jan. 28 - Loy J. Molumby, 46-year-old lawyer, war-time flyer and the man who signed Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons for their championship fight at Shelby in 1923, died early Saturday at his ranch home near Bynum, following a heart attack. Molumby had gone to the ranch to spend the night after participating in court proceedings at Choteau Friday.

Funeral services will be held here early next week. Burial will be at Elkader, Iowa, where Molumby was born March 29, 1891. Molumby was graduated from the law school of the University of Minnesota in 1915. A year later he came here and had practiced law here since. He was president of the Cascade County Bar association at one time, and was a candidate for mayor in 1929, losing by only 60 votes. Molumby was known locally as the champion of ex-service men, and he won a large number of compensation cases, for which he never accepted a fee. On one occasion he rented a home and housed therein 15 ex-service men who were awaiting adjudication of their claims. He also provided his clients with meal tickets until their claims against the government were settled.

When the idea of a heavyweight title fight between Dempsey and Gibbons at Shelby appeared to be dying for lack of a propelling force, Molumby took hold and after flying his own plane to Salt Lake City, to Chicago, to any place where he might overtake Jack Kearns, Dempsey's manager, he obtained signatures of the two fighters to a contract.

Surviving relatives include the widow, Mrs. Margaret Molumby; three sisters, Mrs. E.A. Cogley of Great Falls, Mrs. Walter Bink of Elkader, Iowa, and sister Mary Jeanine of Chicago; and Molumby's father, J.K. Molumby of Elkader.
