Elkader (Special) - Mr. and Mrs. Harley Downey received word that the body of their son, Donald W. Downey, who was killed in action on Iwo Jima Feb. 19, 1945, arrived in the United States, and would be sent to Elkader for burial accompanied by a military escort.
Pfc. Donald W. Downey, served with the 28th Marine regiment of the fifth division, which took part in what has been called the bitterest fighting in marine corps history, and which, on Mt. Suribachi, raised the flag signifying American occupation of the Japanese Island.
He entered the service March 1, 1943, and received his boot training at the Marine base in San Diego, Calif. After being stationed at Mare Island for about a year, he was sent to Camp Pendleton, from where he was sent to the Hawaiians in September, 1944.
He was born in Elkader Feb. 20, 1924. He graduated from St. Joseph's high school, Elkader, and was attending Elkader Junior college when called into service. He was a member of St. Joseph's parish. Besides his parents, he is survived by one brother, Francis E. Downey.

Funeral Saturday for Pfc. Downing
Elkader (Special) - The body of Pfc. Donald W. Downey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Downey, Elkader, will arrive Thursday, April 22, accompanied by a military escort. The body will be taken to the Witt Funeral chapel. Requiem High Mass will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery. The Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will participate in the services.Pfc. Downey was killed in action on Iwo Jima Feb 19, 1945
