Born on Sept. 3, 1900, in DeGraff, Minn., Alice G. Golden was the daughter of Mat and Harriet G. (Norman) Golden. At the age of 3 she moved with her family to Caldwell, Idaho, where she lived for seven years. She was raised on a farm and her mother was her first teacher. Later she and her younger brother rode horseback to school.
In 1919, Miss Goldlen began her nurses training in Boise, Idaho, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1922. Her first job as a nurse was in a doctor's office. Later she took assigments as a private duty nurse for the hospital, which led her to Baker, Ore. It was there that Miss Golden met her future husband, Vernon Sheffert Sr. The couple were married on July 6, 1923, at Baker, Ore.
In 1929, the Shefferts bought a dairy in Iowa. During World War II, 1942 to 1945, Mrs. Sheffert was employed as a nurse at the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash. She and her husband also owned and operated a filbert nut orchard for many years.
Mrs Sheffert lost her husband to death on March 29, 1982, in Tigard, Ore. Following her husband's death, she moved to Montrose in 1982 to be near her son, V. John Sheffert Jr., who died on Aug. 14, 1995.
She is survived by three grandchildren: Steve Sheffert, of Lake Wells, Fla; Marilyn Lentz, of Spanaway, Wash.; and Gay Jurgensen, of Anchorage, Alaska.
In addition to her husband, son, and parents, Mrs. Sheffert was also preceded in death by one brother, Pete Golden.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose and was an active member of St. Mary's Parish Community while her health allowed. Mrs. Sheffert' favorite activity was fishing with her husband. She also loved to play bridge.
