Clarence Scheffert was born December 6, 1889 at Garnavillo, Iowa, and passed away at his home northwest of Hickman Mar. 9, 1919 at the age of 59 years, 3 months, and 3 days.

He spent his entire boyhood at Garnavillo, coming to Nebraska in 1906. In 1912 he was married to Miss Lola Campbell settling in the vicinity north of Hickman, where he has lived since that time. Eight children, 6 sons and 2 daughters were born to this union.

Those surviving are: his wife Lola, his 5 sons: LeRoy, Orland, and George of Lincoln, Glen in the Armed Services, and Albert at home; 2 daughtes Mrs. Eldo Egger (Lois) of Martell, and Mrs. James Heath (Ora Belle) of Seattle; one sister Mrs. Floyd Hamilton of Seatttle; one brother Albert of St. Louis; 6 grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends. One son Ernest, preceded him in death, having been killed in action in the Battle of the Bulge in World War 2 on January 13, 1945.

He was a member of the M.W.A. lodge at Hickman. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday afternoon March 12, at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church in Hickman. Mrs. Daniel Moser sang "God's Tomorrow" "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Nearer My God to Thee" accompanied by Mrs. Martin VerMaas who played for the service. Interment was made in Memorial Park cemetery near Lincoln, Rev. F.J. Fahrion officiated. The mass of floral tributes, the presence of many neighbors and friends signified the respect accorded this man. His neighborliness and friendliness has prompted a friend to add a bit of verse:

FRIENDSHIP
It is my joy in life to find
At every turning of the road
The strong arms of a comrade kind
To help me onward with my load;
And since I have no gold to give
And love alone must make amends
My daily prayer is while I live--
"God make me worthy of my friends".
