J.C. Beck died Friday, May 5th, 1905, at 3:30 p.m. after a lingering illness of six months duration.

Mr. Beck was born in Bavaria, Germany, Dec. 17th, 1845, being 59 years and 5 months of age. He came to America with his parents in the year 1851, and settled on a farm near Garnavillo, this county.

When grown he learned the blacksmith trade and worked several years at Guttenberg, Iowa. In the year 1867 he moved to Elkport and worked at blacksmithing with Conrad Roeder.

In the year of 1870 he was married to Anna Tiede, his surviving widow, and to them were born four children: William, Edward J.(Edmund), Jennie and Arthur. William died at the age of nine years and Edward J. is now a member of the firm of J.C.Beck & Son, Elkport, Jennie is now a teacher in the Guttenberg High School and Arthur now a bookkeeper for the J.V. Farwell Co., Chicago, Ill,. and the bereaved widow are left to mourn the death of a kind and indulgent husband and father.

In the year 1873 Mr. Beck entered into partnership with A.C. Tiede which continued uninterruptedly until 1903, when Mr. Beck purchased the interest of his partner Mr. Tiede, and took his son Edward into partnership. During his thirty eight years residence here he became known as an honest, upright man, and was greatly loved for his many good qualities. Mr. Beck was a noble man, a true friend and strictly honest.

He held many positions of honor and trust and at his death was treasurer of Jos. Morris Lodge I.O.O.F., which lodge he joined about thirty years ago.

The funeral was held under the auspices of Jos. Morris lodge I.O.O.F., Rev. Dutton, a brother Odd Fellow, of Fayette, Iowa preached an able funeral sermon. Over eighty Odd Fellows were in line to follow the remains of their beloved brother to their last resting place.

Odd Fellows were present from Elkader, Guttenberg, Colesburg, Osterdock, Edgewood and Greeley, besides a large number of members of the M.B.A. society, of which Mr. Beck was also a member.

The funeral was the largest ever held in Elkport showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held by the people of this community. The pall bearers were H.H. Hagensick, of Elkader; H.A. Mallory, of Osterdock; George Friedlein, of Guttenberg; and Edwin Jennings, Charles Johnson and Fred Krieg of Elkport. May he rest in peace.
