Mary Homewood

Mary Homewood, 83, of Waukon, formerly of Volga, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a brief illness. A private inurnment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Volga with Rev. Steve Brackett officiating.

Mary was born in rural Volga December 18, 1924 to Cliff and Eva (Burrington) Jennings. Around the age of one, Mary moved to Volga. She graduated from Volga High School.

December 17, 1943 she was united in marriage to LeRoy "Tag" Homewood at the Methodist parsonage in West Union. To this marriage, one daughter was born, Lois Adam of Waukon. In December of 2003, Mary and Tag celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

For a time, Mary was employed with McTaggart's in Elkader, where she enjoyed doing interior painting. She also did various jobs for people in Volga. A passion of hers was coaching the women's town softball team and traveling to neighboring towns. There was always lots of laughs for everyone - win or lose! Mary's greatest love was to go fishing. Mary taught her granddaughters to fish, as well as her great-grandchildren. Even if the fishing wasn't good, Grandma always made the trip fun.

Mary also enjoyed history and gathering any information about Volga, in particular. Just ask Mary if you needed to know something about Volga! One of her greatest accomplishments was the Volga History Book. She loved helping organize Volga School reunions. Mary loved to take pictures (that way she didn't have to be in the picture!) For the past six years, Mary lived at Southcrest in Waukon, where she enjoyed playing cards with the other residents, taking walks and visiting on the bench.

Mary was a member of the Clayton County Genealogical Society, Pioneer Cemetery Restoration and the Hillcrest Cemetery Board.

Survivors include her daughter, Lois (John) Adam of Waukon; granddaughters Paula (Steve) Enyart of Postville, Melissa (Dave, Jr.) Fish of Waukon, Vicky (Duane) Nagel of Postville; great-grandchildren Adam, Alex and Avery Enyart, Jonathan and Ashley Fish, and Austin Nagel; her brother, Donald Jennings of Arlington; nieces and nephews; and many friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, LeRoy, in 2004.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hillcrest Cemetery Association in Volga.
