Robert J. "Chick" Seybert

Robert J. "Chick" Seybert, 82, of Waukon died Friday, September 12, 2008 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 16 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Robert Joseph "Chick" Seybert was born May 19, 1926 in Elkader. His parents were Fred and Verna (Schutz) Seybert. Chick was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and graduated from St. Joseph's High School, both in Elkader. After attending Jr. College for a year, he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, seeing some of his duty in Hawaii and the South Pacific.

June 26, 1950 he married Dorothy Nydegger at St. Joseph's Church in Elkader. Chick spent his entire working career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. He began in 1947 as a lineman and large equipment operator. In 1954 he moved to Waukon, where he worked in the phone service area until his retirement in 1984.

Chick was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, serving as a lector and Eucharistic Minister as well as on numerous committees. He was a long-time volunteer and currently served as president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Waukon. He was also active with the Telephone Pioneers of America and in the adoptive grandparent program in the Waukon Schools. Chick enjoyed music and dancing, especially big bands and jazz. He liked spending time outdoors, hunting in his younger days and trout fishing more recently. As an avid sports fan, he was a loyal follower of the Chicago Cubs and Bears.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Waukon; four children, Susan (Dick) Intlekofer of Madison, WI, Vince (Carol) Seybert of Fairfax, Deb (Scott) Ryan of Hutchinson, MN, and Steve (Nicole) Seybert of Nora Springs; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Alice Hurley and Betty Colby.

Honorary casketbearers were Kenneth Brandt and Ray Burke. Casketbearers were Sean Ryan, Greg Intlekofer, Jim Hurley, Dave Newton, Jim Dougherty, Roger Ruegnitz, Ryan Herold and Chad Herold.
