Hulda M. Baade

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on August 8, 2004 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Volga, Iowa, with interment in the East Side Cemetery, Elkader, for Hulda Minnie Henrietta (Kalke) Baade, 93, who died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a brief illness. Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born January 12, 1911, the youngest child of thirteen children, to Fritz and Anna (Mahnke) Kalke on the home farm in Read Township. The DOT Garage is built now on part of the home place. Hulda was baptized in the Lutheran faith, June 4, 1911, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, where she was also confirmed in German on March 25, 1923. She attended grade school at the County Home School. After completing sixth grade, she started working for different families as a housemaid and also milked cows when necessary. She returned to her parent’s home, helping them with the farming for two years.

Hulda was married to Clarence William Baade, Farmersburg on November 28, 1929, at the bride’s home in Read Township. A terrible blizzard occurred in the area after their 4:00 wedding. Four children were born to this union, Dorothy Ann, Cletus Clarence, Judith Clarene and Lorna Mae.

Clarence & Hulda lived on various farms in the Elkader area. In 1943, they purchased the Leo Keleher family farm in Boardman Township, where their son and daughter-in-law, Cletus and Zala, and Hulda’s grandson, Daryl Baade and family now reside. Hulda enjoyed farming and helped her husband with field work as well as the animal chores. She cooked many large meals for threshing and silo filling crews. Clarence, Hulda, Judy and Lorna moved to Elkader in 1961, to the Tavis home that they had purchased in 1959. Hulda was a charter member of both the Boardman Friendship Club and the Bethany Lutheran Church. She enjoyed volunteering at her church and the Elkader Meal Site. She loved gardening, canning, growing beautiful flowers, crocheting and sewing. Many people have been the recipients of her crocheted doilies and have admired her beautiful flowers on East Bridge Street. She loved taking care of her family and feeding them whenever they visited.

Hulda is survived by her children, Dorothy (Mrs. Robert) Bushkofsky, Cletus and Zala Baade, Judith (Mrs Marlo) Schnurstein, Lorna and Dennis Christeleit; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, on September 10, 1977, two sons-in-law, Marlo Schnurstein, July 3, 1979 and Robert Bushkofsky, September 9, 1982 and one granddaughter, Tammy Christeleit, July 21, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and seven sisters.
