Ken Goings
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on August 12, 2004 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa with interment in the East Side Cemetery, Elkader, for Ken Goings, 58, of Elkader, IA, who died Monday night, August 9, 2004 at his home of a heart attack. Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, in charge of arrangements.
Ken Goings was born November 28, 1945 in Charles City, Iowa to Paul and Ardith (Oleson) Goings. He grew up in Nashua, IA, in a loving family consisting of his parents, sister Kathy and brother Carl. Ken graduated from Nashua Community High School in 1964.
In 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Ann Trepton. Ken and Ruth have four children that are their greatest joy and delight: Scott, Mark, Peggy and Mary. All of their life’s accomplishments pale in comparison to the importance that they have always placed on the raising of their children.
Ken graduated from UNI in 1970, with a double major in business and math. Ken’s first teaching job started in January of 1970 at Central Community School in Elkader. He loved his job and the community so much that he and Ruth made it their permanent home. Ken taught at Central for the past thirty four years. Ken received his master’s degree in business in 1976. He has been active in so many things in the community and his church. He was church council president, Central Education president, president of Northeast Iowa Education Unit, an ambulance driver, an EMT, and a board member of Four Oaks Country Club. Ken loved to hunt deer, rabbit, and pheasant. He loved horses, westerns, and Louis L’Amour books. He was an enthusiastic, aggressive bridge player and loved working with his hands. He was always working behind the scenes making sure everything was fixed and ready for everyone else. Ken painted farm buildings for many summers to make extra income for his family.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Goings, Elkader, his children, Scott (married to Amy Woodworth), St. Paul, MN, Mark (married to Barbara Goings), Augusta, WI, Peggy (special friend Miles Pitcairn) Goings, San Diego, CA; and Mary, St. Paul, MN; grandchildren, James, Jackson and Samuel; his parents, Paul and Ardith Goings, Nashua and a sister, Kathy Baird, Sioux Falls, SD.
Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Carl. Ken was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, papa, friend, colleague and person. We love you, Ken!
