Beatrice Flavia (Huinker) Schissel

Funeral services for Beatrice Schissel were held at 2:00 p.m. on March 8, 2004 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa, with interment in the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.

Beatrice Flavia (Huinker) Schissel, 95, of Monona, Iowa, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, following a brief illness.

She was born on November 15, 1908, at Festina to Joseph and Johanna (Braun) Huinker. She attended Catholic School in Festina through the eighth grade. On June 26, 1928, Bea was united in marriage to Leonard Schissel in Festina. Fr. Ruby presided over the wedding. Bea and Leonard were blessed with two children, Lawrence and Mary Ann.

Beatrice and Leonard lived with Leonard’s parents in Ft. Atkinson their first year of marriage, then moved to Carroll County in western Iowa and returned to Monona in 1949, when they started the Culligan Soft Water Service in Clayton County.

Bea was a homemaker who enjoyed being with her family. She took care of her sister Walburga's children following her sister’s death. She joined the Catholic Daughter of America at age of twenty years, and was a member since 1928. Bea was a member of the Archdiocese Council for Catholic Women (ACCW), Archdiocese of Dubuque Council, where she served as treasurer for one term. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Rosary Society since 1948. Bea was a member of the Monona Garden Club for forty years, from 1950 through the 90’s, serving as president for one year. She also was a member of the Better Homemakers Club of Monona. She was recognized as State of Iowa “Farmer’s Wife of the Year” during World War II. She served as Woman’s Chairman of the Carroll County Farm Bureau, where she also enjoyed being a member of the Farm Bureau Chorus. Bea enjoyed being a senior citizen volunteer, delivering Meals on Wheels in Monona. Bea received the Iowa Governor’s Award for “Senior Volunteer of the Year”.

Survivors include her son Lawrence (Royanne) of Santa Fe, NM; son-in-law, Gerald Hawes of Harpers Ferry; four grandchildren, David Schissel, Aindrea Schissel, Christopher Hawes, Shawn Marie Hawes; two great-grandchildren, Donovan and Trevor Schissel; a sister, Viola Tessmer of Calmar, sisters-in-law, Rose Huinker of Oelwein and Edna Huinker of Dubuque and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bea was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1990, her daughter, Mary Ann Hawes on November 5, 1984; brothers, Arnold Huinker of St Lucas, Edmund Huinker of Calmar, Alfred Huinker of Monona, Leo Huinker of Calmar, Oscar Huinker of Oelwein, Victor Huinker of McGregor, Gregory Huinker of Ossian; and two sisters, Walburga Zwiebohmer and Albina Schneberger, both of Calmar, Iowa.
