LANCASTER, Wis. -- Gwendolyn M. Nihles, 77, of Lancaster, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 17, at St. Clement Catholic Church, Lancaster, with the Rev. William Seipp officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement Cemetery, rural Lancaster. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster, and after 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 17, at the funeral home.
She was born on Oct. 21, 1930, in Garnavillo, daughter of Joseph and Monica (Winch) Berns. She graduated from St. Clement Catholic High School in Bankston, as valedictorian.
She married Vernon H. Nihles on June 21, 1955, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Bankston; he preceded her in death. Together they farmed for many years in North Lancaster Township, moving to Lancaster in 1981.
She was employed at the former D&D Store, Lancaster.
Gwen was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, Lancaster. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, and watching "Wheel of Fortune."
Survivors are her five children, David (Julie) Nihles, of Lancaster, Diane (Ken) Taylor, of Spring Green, Cathy (Syver) Wilson, of Eau Claire, Mary (Greg) Fischer, of Lancaster, and Gary (Lisa Beck) Nihles, of Lancaster; nine grandchildren, Bryan, Melissa, Loretta, Rachel Wilson, Michelle, Ryan, Andrea, Jacob Fischer, and Jason Nihles; her brother, Dick (Jane) Berns, of Dubuque; and sisters, Sr. Mary Andrea Berns, of Rockford, Ill.; Rita Martin, of Cedar Rapids, and Bernelda Berns, of Dubuque.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Steven.
