Larry Gene Kurth

Larry Gene Kurth, of Farmersburg, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. He was 63.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 14, at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. The Rev. Bruce Hanson officiated. Burial followed in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Monona. Music was by LaFonda Scherf, organist, and Keith and Dixie Kutzbach, soloists. Casket bearers were Lew Schrandt, Jim Johanningmeier, Keith Kutzbach, Charles Shekleton, Donald Voss, and Russell Pate. Honorary casket bearers were Roland Jones, Larry Friedlein, Bernie White, Richard Reusch, and Calvin Henkes. The Leonard Funeral Home in Monona was in charge of arrangements.

Larry was born May 3, 1944, in Farmersburg, to Dale and Isabel (Sass) Kurth. He was baptized on June 14, 1944, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, by the Rev. R.C. Schlueter. He was confirmed on March 30, 1958, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, by the Rev. Richard Steege.

Larry graduated from MFL High School in 1962. Following graduation, Larry worked for Northeast Iowa Dairy Coop in Luana, as a dryer operator. He then attended Coleman Technical Institute in LaCrosse, Wis., graduating in two years with a marketing degree.

He was united in marriage to Julie Dettmann on July 10, 1966, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, by Julie's uncle, the Rev. James Hughes. Three wonderful children were born to this union.

Larry worked for Mississippi Valley Milk Producer in Luana and then transferred to Moline, Ill., in February of 1968. He was later transferred to Mount Joy, and was the assistant to the controller for two years. On March 17, 1970, Larry and Julie purchased their farm from Uncle Virgil and Aunt Gertrude Kurth. Larry and Julie farmed together for twenty-six years. Larry worked for Design Homes for a time and C.J. Moyna & Sons Construction until he retired.

Larry was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg where he was involved in the Men's Group, Church Council and was an usher. He served on the school board for ten years and was president for two years. Larry was instrumental in whole grade sharing and the merging of the MFL and Mar Mac Schools in 1991. Larry was a township trustee and served on numerous committees and boards over the years.

Larry and Julie celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on July 10, 2006. He enjoyed woodworking, water skiing, boating, fixing things, Oliver tractors, trains and 50's and 60's music. He loved spending time with his family and friends and always had a wink and a smile.

Larry was preceded in death by his grandson, Blayne Gene Kurth; paternal grandparents, Fred and Cora Kurth; and maternal grandparents, John and Lucy Sass.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Kurth, Farmersburg; his parents, Dale and Isabel Kurth, Monona; three children, Darci (fiancé, Scott Quamme) Kurth, Cottage Grove, Wis., Rodney (Andrea) Kurth, Luana, and Valerie Kurth, Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Katelyn and Tyler; one sister, Gloria (Leigh) Keehner, Farmersburg; and nieces and nephews.
