John J. Rynasiewicz, M.D., died Aug. 18 in Minneapolis after being diagnosed in January with Acute Lymphocytic Luekemia. He was 32.

His maternal grandmother is Mrs. Lawrence Schultz, Luana.

John Joseph Rynasiewicz, the son of Joseph and Erma Jean Schultz Rynasiewicz, was born in Schenectady, New York, on April 29, 1950. At the age of fourteen, John moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from Charles F. Brush High School in 1968. From 1968-'72, John attended Duke University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and served as president his senior year.

Following college, John enrolled as a medical student at the Ohio State University. He obtained his M. D., with special achievement in surgery, after three years. In 1975, John became a resident in surgery at the University of Minnesota. This current year he was chief resident in surgery and was to have become a transplant fellow of the department. In January of this year John was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Luekemia (ALL) and died on August 18th of an aggressive fungal meningitis.

In addition to his clinical duties, John was involved principally in research on the use of cyclosporin in organ transplantation and served as director of the hospital's cyclosporin research program. He published numerous articles in medical journals and lectured both in the United States and Europe. Membership in professional societies included the American College of Surgeons (candidate) and the Minnesota Medical Association. John was also an avid golfer and a member of the Hazeltine National Golf Club.

John is survived by his father, Joseph; a brother Robert; a nephew Sam; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Lawrence Schultz. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1980.
