Helen E. Johanningmeier, 71, of Monona, died Wed., April 11, 2001, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Sat., April 14 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon under the direction of Rev. Lynn G. Groe, Rev. David E. Schafer, and Rev. Christopher Staley. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Helen Elva Decker Johanningmeier was born Sept. 24, 1929, on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon farm of her parents, Ernest Edward and Cora Ella (Smith) Decker. She attended the rural Mapledale School and continued to help at home on the farm and with caring for her younger brothers and sisters.
On Sept. 23, 1950, she married Maloy Johanningmeier at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in McGregor. She and Maloy lived and farmed in Jefferson Township for 50 years before retiring and moving to Monona in 1999. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and its ladies circles as well as a neighborhood homemaker's club. Helen enjoyed playing cards, quilting, gardening, raising flowers, going to family and community events, and attending the activities of her children and grandchildren. She also liked music and would often sing along with playing the harmonica.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ernest Decker; and an infant sister. Survivors include her husband, Maloy, of Monona; two sons, Steven (Jane) of Monona and Jerry of Waukon; a daughter, Sheila (Tom) Neuhaus of Monona; 11 grandchildren; six sisters, Maureen (Wylo) Wagner and Annabelle (Richard) Marti, both of Waukon, Avis Berns of Monona, Bernetta (Randall) Appleton of Edgewood, Geraldine Thies of Cedar Rapids, and Janice (Norman) Melheim of Butterfield, MN; and two brothers, George (Betty) Decker of Waukon and Gerald Decker of Gillette, WY.
Honorary casketbearers were her granddaughters, Angela, Amy, Ann, Tracy, and Lisa Johanningmeier, and Rachel Neuhaus. Casketbearers were Tom and Jeremy Neuhaus, and Jason, Mike, Matthew, and Scott Johanningmeier.
Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
