Obituary obtained from Strawberry Point Library.
1924

Another Pioneer called to his rich reward.

James W Tracy, son of James and Clarissa Champion Tracy was born near Freeport, Stevenson County, Illinois, January 11, 1845, and died at his home in Strawberry Point, Iowa April 26, 1924 having attained the age of 79 years, 3 months, and fifteen days.

When a child of 2 years, he with his parents, brothers and sisters, came westward and settled on the Tracy homestead four and one half miles northwest of Strawberry Point. This was in the Spring of 1847.

This farm is still the Tracy homestead and was his home for a period of seventy years. The deceased often spoke proudly of his long residence on the homestead.

His life extended over a period which saw great changes from the pioneer conditions of life, and those of the present day.

In the Spring of 1920 he came to Strawberry Point, which has since been his home.

On the 22 day of January, 1877 he was united in marriage wish Miss Katherine O'Brien of Elkader, Iowa. They began their married life on the Tracy homestead, and together have journeyed through the sorrows and sunshine of life for over a period of fourty-seven years.

To this union were born 3 children, two sons and one daughter, John R. and Chester A., both of this place and Daisy, now the wife of John F. Follon, residing near Volga City. These children with his beloved wife and two little grandchildren survive to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate father and husband. One brother, Joseph H. Tracy of Fayette, Iowa also survives, and one sister, Mrs. Nancy M Dalton of Taylor County, Iowa. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

As a man he was strictly honest and hardworking. As a neighbor he was helpful and accomodating.
The last few months of his life were filled with day of suffering, but he bore all patiently, always trying to make life easier for those about him.

He will be missed in the home circle, the neighborhood, and by all who came in contact with him. Especially will the pioneer, who loves his pioneer life miss their old friend, one who lived when real friendship meant more than it does today.

The funeral services were held at the home Monday, there being many of his old time neighbors and friends present to pay a last sad tribute. Rev. Frizzelle, past or of the M. E. Church of Strawberry Point conducted the services, after which kind and loving hand took the remains to the Strawberry Point Cemetery for internment.

Death truly claimed a pioneer of Clayton county April 26th when Jas. W. Tracy was called to his reward. Seventy-four years ago he came to Clayton County. He came when bear, deer, beaver, wildcat, and buffalo were plentiful in Iowa. Like other pioneers he conquered the wilderness, and saw roads built. Having finished his work, the fruits of his labors goes to others to enjoy and carry on. The debt that we owe the sturdy pioneer is .... (unreadable) This pioneer did not live in vain.
