Sabra A (Humphrey) Egbert 1851-1910 obit
Monona Leader, Monona, Clayton, Iowa
17 Feb 1910

Death of Mrs. Geo. Egbert
The death angel stopped at the threshold of the home of Geo. Egbert Saturday afternoon at five o’clock, and found the wife and mother ready to answer the summons. For two years she had been a sufferer from cancer and had borne the pain and ravages of the disease with rare fortitude and Christian courage.

The deceased was a woman of unusual virtues in mind and soul, and her methods were always to be prepared for any contingency in the future. Two weeks ago she called to her bedside, friends from Monona, where she wanted to rest in her last long sleep, and made all arrangements with them for her funeral and burial at that place. All the details of the funeral here were also planned and provided for her with as much calmness as if she were only going away on a visit. Her thoughtfulness for others, when she was in better health, was along the same methodical lines, and she so greatly endeared herself to her neighbors that her death has caused as much sorrow in her neighborhood as though she were a member of each of the families.

Sabra A. Humphrey was born at West Carlyle, Coshocton Co. O., on April 37 [27], 1851. And died at Mason City, Iowa, February 12, 1910. In 1853 her parents moved to Kalamazoo, Mich., and in 1856 to New Carlyle, Ind., where she was married to George Egbert, December 22, 1869. They came to his home at Monona, Iowa, where they lived for over thirty years, coming to Mason city in 1901.

She joined the Methodist church at the tender age of nine years and has ever since been an exemplary member of that church, demonstrating the joy and faith in the Nazarene by her good works and rich fruits of a kindly heart. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, W.R.C. societies and was a helpful and forceful member of whatever society or association in which she has membership.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, George Egbert, two daughters, Mrs. Ray Farley, of Yorkton, Sask., Can., and Mrs. Mary Kidd, of this city, and a brother, Hiram Humphrey of South Bend, Ind., and a grand daughter, Miss Florence Kidd, of this city, all of whom were at her bedside when the angel of God touched her eyelids into their last long sleep.

A short funeral service accurred Sabbath afternoon at 3 p.m., when friends paid their last respects. Dr. Carlton pastor of the Methodist church, spoke beautifully of her exemplary life and Mrs. Shipman sang two selections, “Home of the Soul” and “The Christian’s Good Night” which she had sung for her in her last illness and it was her request that these songs should be sung at the funeral services here. -- Mason City Daily Globe Gazette.

The remains were brought to Monona Monday afternoon. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church, at 10:30, Tuesday morning. Her pastor W.W. Carlton, preached the sermon. Her body was laid to rest in the Monona cemetery.
