THADEUS STEPHENS EGBERT was born in Monona, April 9th, 1866. Died at 2 p.m., Feb. 20, 1909. Aged 42 years, 10 months and 11 days. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Egbert. He grew to manhood while the family resided on the farm east of Monona. In 1888 the family moved to Monona.

October 12, 1893 he was married to Nellie Amon Wellman. The union was blessed with two children, Miss Jennie Ruth and Dorathy [Dorothy] Kathryn.

Since March 1, 1903, Mr. Egbert was employed as a Rural Carrier in the U.S. Mail service. In this capacity in all sorts of weather he made an exceptionally excellent service, and held the good opinion and friendliness of a large list of patrons. Being of a cheerful disposition, firm in the performance of his duties, and true to friends, he life was characterized by principles of honor, that marked a manhood worthy of emulation.

His sickness was of short duration. Taken on Saturday night with and acute attack of pleurisy which centered in a severe case of pneumonia, a week hence at 2 p.m., his life ended from the severe struggle of the seven days previous. Just at the meridian of manhood in the prime of life to be cut down, seemed too much to believe. His was a promising life, his surroundings and the friendships he held so dearly, with home companionships, giving every inducement for the future. Sad, though the death, the will of the master was cheerfully obeyed and we part with our friend and associate with sorrow, yet with a kindly remembrance of his good qualities and many virtues.

Mr. Egbert was a member of the Modern Woodman of America, and a member of the Masonic Fraternity for the past 19 years, in which order he was held in high esteem as a brother and co-worker.

Besides the immediate family mourning his demise there is a large circle of relatives. Among those present at the funeral: Wm. Wellman, father-in-law; Miss Jesse Wellman, Fred Wellman and the L.A. Wellman family; Geo. Egbert, brother, of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Egbert, brother, of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Wyatt, sister, of McGregor; Mrs. Hester Egbert and son Ray; Mrs. Maude Zimmerman, of Oelwein, James Barnes of Mason City; Ray Wellman of Blooming Prairie, Minn.

Among those who could not attend were his two sisters, Mrs. S.S. Williams and Mrs. Ella McGonigle of Los Angeles, Cal., A host of personal friends sympathize with the family in the great affliction brought upon them.
The funeral was held on Monday [22 Feb 1909] at 2 p.m. under the auspices of Clayton Lodge, No. 70 A.F. & A. M. A number of members from Farmersburg and Postville being present, and participating in the last sad rites to our revered brother.

Services were held at the Congregational church, the house unable to accommodate all who assembled, including very many of his patrons on Route No. 3. Impressive services were conducted by Rev. Cheney and Rev. Bird. At the Cemetery the Masonic service was conducted by the worshipful Master, Ed. F. Slitor.

The floral decorations were numerous and very fine. The Masonic Lodge was represented by a beautiful emblem of the Square and Compass in carnations and roses; the Modern Woodmen, a selection and variety emblematic of the order; the Rural Route Carriers and Postoffice force a heart in carnations and tea roses. Others furnished gifts in various designs.

Farewell to this generous noble, manly man. Though numbered in the great lodge on the other shore, may we, who survive, emulate his virtues and be guided by the precepts so plainly engraved on the tablets of silver handed down from character, honor and manhood.
