Mrs. Wheeler Rites Sunday
The sudden death of Mrs. Mattie Wheeler early last Friday morning, came as a severe shock to her family and many friends.
Mrs. Wheeler was taken ill suddenly during the night, and lived but a short time.
Her passing recalls her many years of faithful and dependable work in the Methodist church here, both Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler being among the little group who planned an dbuilt the present church nearly sixty years ago and who have been closely identified with church work.
Martha Jane Strang was born at Sandusky, Wisconsin, July 1st, 1862, and lived there until she came here with her family when about 10 years of age, living here for the remainder of her life with the exception of a few years spent in Charles City.
She was married October 2, 1883, to William Gilman Wheeler at Charles City, and the couple came here to make their home, and Mrs. Wheeler has lived in the same house ever since. Mr. Wheeler preceded his wife in death on Feb. 20, 1927.
Survivors are her children: W. Jay Wheeler of Chicago, Mrs. Deva Harris of San Diego, Calif., Earl G. Wheeler of Bradford, Penn.; Mrs. Marion Henthorne of Marquette, and Dr. Donald Wheeler of LaCrosse. One grandson, Capt. Wm. W. Henthrone, was killed in action last June 15, in Burma.
Funeral services were held at the home here Sunday afternoon, Rev. E. H. Shuey officiating, and burial was made at Pleasant Grove cemetary, McGregor. Casket bearers were Ray Barr, Harry Schott, Wm. Graff,, Lloyd Hakeman, Elmer Langlie and Don Herron.
Out of town relatives in attendance were Jay Wheeler of Chicago, Gill De Lorimeir of St. Paul, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Vern De Lorimeir and son of Prairie du Chien, Dr. and Mrs. D.S. Wheeler of LaCrosse, Andy H. Harris of Parker, South Dakota, and Mrs. Betty Henthorne of McGregor.
