Born Cecil Helen Berns on December 22, 1912 to William and Lucrecia (Walleser) Berns of rural Guttenberg. Cecil attended country school, St. Joseph's school in Garnavillo, and Immaculate Conception in Dubuque.
January of 1933, Cecil married Leander Heck of Guttenberg. The first 14 years of their married life was spent farming southwest of Garnavillo. They went into business in St. Olaf and later moved to an acreage northwest of Farmersburg. Here Leander died August 25, 1959.
Cecil did housekeeping in Catholic rectories for 26 years. First in Sacred Heart parish in Eagle Grove, IA, St. Patrick's parish - Garryowen in rural Bernard, Monti in rural Masonville, then in St. Mary's in McGregor. From there she retired in 1986 and moved to Garnavillo.
Cecil was a member of Rosary Society, ACCW, CDA, and Legion of Mary in the parishes where she belonged.
Cecil is survived by a foster-son, Jerry (Deloras) Brown of Othello, Wash.; two sisters, Dorothy Miller of McGregor and Noreen Rowland of Garnavillo; and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Berns of Guttenberg, and many nieces and nephews.
Cecil was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers. Wilfred and Kenneth; sister-in-law, Shirley Berns; four sisters, Inez Kann, Bernadette Cherne, Florence Saeugling and Betty Berns, and brothers-in-law, Robert Rowland, Ray Kann, Albert Cherne, Ray Saeugling, and Edward Miller.
Casket Bearers: Vernon & Joyce Cherne, Steve & Diane Rowland, Sheila & Billy Smith, and Joyce & Bob Hyde.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Garnavillo, IA. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at the church. Funeral service will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, IA at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 16, 2007. Rev. Marvin Bries will be officiating. Internment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Garnavillo, IA.
