Harold LaVerne Peterson, 80, of rural Farmersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at the Great River Care Center, McGregor following a long illness.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf. The Rev. Marshall Hahn officiated. Internment with military honors was at the Norway Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural St. Olaf.

Friends called from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf and after 1 p.m. at the church on Saturday.

Harold LaVern Peterson was born March 20, 1926, at rural Forrest City, to Thomas and Mabel (Bergan) Peterson. Harold attended country school at rural St. Olaf.

He was married to Dorothy Mae Kurth on Oct. 12, 1949, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Six children were born to this union.

Harold served in the United States Army during WW II and was stationed in Korea during peace time. He farmed until his retirement. During his lifetime, Harold worked at sweet corn factory at Elgin, Grove Feed Mill; sold seed corn for 17 years (Jacques and Mycogen): worked at Wolf Mills and Wolf Hatchery in Elkader, sold nursery stock and served as a janitor at Norway Lutheran Church, the Chapel in St. Olaf and the last Norwegian service at the chapel in St. Olaf. He was vice-president of Lutheran Brotherhood of Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, where he also served as a Deacon. He served as VFW Quartermaster for several tears.

He loved spending time with his grandkids, dancing and farming. Harold drove tractors for neighbors during field work time. He spent a lot of time driving friends to their doctor visits. He always wanted to go somewhere – garage sales, farm sales, whatever! He loved people and he loved to visit. “Harold Reporter” never met a stranger. He would always stop and talk to someone, even if he was 100 miles from home; he found something in common with that person.

Harold is survived by his children: Allen (Julie) Peterson, LaCrescent, Minn.; Darlene (Carl) Wood, Strawberry Point; Darrell Peterson, Cedar Rapids; Dennis (Barbara) Peterson, Cedar Rapids; Julie (Eugene) Mueller, Luana; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one brother: Wayne (Bernadine) Peterson, Elkader; two sisters: Mavis Peterson, St. Olaf and Ruth Peterson, Strawberry Point.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Arlyn Peterson; nephews: John Bissell, Brad Bissell, Kevin Germann, Kent Peterson and a great-nephew, Jeremy Bissell.

Casket bearers were Randy Looby, Terry Looby, Marty Bissell, Jerry Bissell, Larry Doerring, Lee Doerring and Jeff Germann. Honorary bearers were Rick Looby, Lanny Looby and Stan Houg.
