Robert Eberling

Funeral services for Robert Eberling, age 66, were held Friday, July 5, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. The Rev. James Allison officiated. Joann Martins was the organist. Casket bearers were Tom Schott, Darrin Smock, Milton Schutte, Raymond Sass, Marvin Winters, and Randy Wedo. Honorary casket bearers were his grandchildren. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Robert William Eberling, the son of Elmer John Eberling and Lucille (Hammond) Eberling, was born August 29, 1935, in Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. He passed away Monday, July 1, 2002, at his home in Luana.

He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Robert attended the Luana Elementary School and graduated from the Postville High School in 1954.

On November 13, 1955, Robert married Darlene Anna Amanda Grotegut at the Salem United Church of Christ, north of Postville. To this union three children were born. They lived in Postville for a short time, then farmed near Castalia for two years before returning to Postville. Robert drove a milk truck in his early years, then drove a semi for Dwaine Walters for seven years. He was employed by the City of Postville and then worked at Iowa Turkey Products before retiring.

Robert enjoyed having his grandchildren come to visit. He liked fishing and playing cards and was an avid Cubs fan. He enjoyed helping in the garden and planting his potatoes. Robert liked to go for drives in his pickup. He liked parades and fireworks, his Cuckoo clock, and feeding the birds.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Darlene, sister Virginia Monroe, Virginia's husband Edwin and their six children, brother-in-law Eugene Grotegut, and nephew Mark Reierson.

Surviving are his three children, Brenda (Don) Biermann, LaFarge, Wis., Rick (Teresa) Eberling, Soperton, Ga., and Randy (Betty) Eberling, Postville; grandchildren Zachariah (Kami) Biermann, Amos Biermann, Robin Eberling, Nicholas Eberling, Andrew Eberling, and Miranda Eberling; sister Helen (Joe) Reierson, of Elgin; and sister-in-law Lois Grotegut, Postville.

Robert was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville.
