Funeral services for Effie Henrietta Thompson, 93, formerly of Monona, were held Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Rev. Allen Bidne officiated with burial at the Monona City Cemetery, Monona. Connie Halvorson was organist and Christopher Staley was soloist. Casket bearers were grandsons, Brent Thompson, Scott Thompson, Kevin Thompson, Jim Thompson, Larry Thompson, Mark Severn, Dean Severn, Robert Sass, Doug McNally and Bruce Glen Walker. Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of arrangements.
Effie was born March 3, 1909, in Elkader, Iowa, daughter of William and Emma (Kahlbaum) Gottschalk. She was baptized June 20, 1909, by the Rev. J. Burkhaul at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, and received her education in the rural schools in Boardman Township.
On October 1, 1930, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Thompson of Monona. Four children were born to this union. They farmed on the farm south of Monona, now owned and operated by their son Richard. In 1967, she and her husband retired and moved to Monona.
Effie took an active interest in her community. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, ELCW and Faith Circle. She loved to bake pies and play cards. She died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville from complications of a stroke.
Surviving are three sons, Virgil (Mary Lou) Thompson, Richard (Barbara) Thompson, all of Monona, Roger (Bonnie) Thompson of LaPorte City; one daughter, Karen (Allen) Severn of Rockton, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Dale Thompson, Farmersburg..
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kenneth on November 11, 1995; one sister, Lucinda Glawe, St Olaf; and three brothers, Harvey of Garnavillo and John and Valley of Elkader.
