Daniel Lloyd Caya
Daniel Lloyd Caya, 53, rural St. Olaf (formerly of Prairie du Chien), died at home on Saturday, June 5, 2004, following a courageous struggle with cancer. He was born November 6, 1950 at the Prairie du Chien General Hospital to Lloyd and Marguerite (Dagnon) Caya.
Dan attended St. Gabriel's Catholic School in Prairie du Chien and graduated from Campion Jesuit High School in 1968. He went on to graduate from the Vernon County Teacher's College, Viroqua, in 1970.
Dan then worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for two years. His sister, Margaret, who worked for GTE, then recommended Dan seek employment with that company, which began his career of over 31 years, initially as a coin collector and then as a Telephone Technician. Dan enjoyed these years as the "Telephone Man", working outdoors and with the public.
To Dan's first marriage, two children were born; Nicole Marie and Matthew Flynn. Dan was then united in marriage to Sandy (Reeg) Schutte on April 27, 2002 at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien.
Dan's life and joy was spending time with family and friends (especially the "Cabin Crew); golfing, hunting, cooking, playing cards, and traveling with his wife, Sandy. Dan was a loyal member of St. Gabriel's Parish, where he was a faithful member of the Holy Name Society.
Dan is survived by his loving wife Sandy; his children, Nicole (Jason) Tayek of McGregor; Matt (fiance Katherine) of Charlotte, NC; one grandson, Tyler Tayek; stepchildren, Bryan Schutte, who attends ISU at Ames, and Aaron and Alayna Schutte, both at home; his mother, Marguerite Caya of Prairie du Chien; mother- and father-in-law Carlyle and Betty Reeg of Monona; one brother, Bill (Ellen) Caya of Glenview, IL; six sisters, Julie (Steve) Pitsch of La Crosse, Margaret (Emerson) Barth of Madison, Yvonne Johnston of La Crosse, Cathy (Norbert) Swenson of Prairie du Chien, Monica Brown of La Crosse, and Annette (Dan) Schickert of Prairie du Chien; one brother-in-law Steve (Jolene) Reeg of Monona, 22 nieces and nephews, and three great nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd and brother-in-law, Jeff Brown.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien, WI.
