Houg, Mardella Ruby (Sabbann) 1919-2001

Mardella Ruby Houg

Mardella Ruby Houg, daughter of Ewald and Hilma (Klinge) Sabbann, was born Oct. 3, 1914, at Farmersburg. She was baptized Nov. 8, 1914, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, and confirmed Aug. 25, 1929, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. In 1916, the family moved to Monona. Mardella attended public school and played basketball for four years, a sport she really enjoyed. She graduated from Monona High School in 1932. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

On May 26, 1936, she was united In marriage to Carl Houg at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Carl and Mardella farmed west of Farmersburg for five years. They then purchased and moved to a farm west of Monona. They moved to Monona in 1971. They were blessed with three children, Carl W., Gary, and Marilyn.

In 1956, Mardella started baking and decorating wedding and birthday cakes. She also started baking her special finger rolls. After 30 years she retired. She always had a large garden and lots of flowers.

Mardella died Wed., Dec. 19, 2001, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl, who died May 1, 2000; and a grandson, Jeff Houg.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Nuehring of Marion; two sons, Carl W. (Evelyn) Houg of Peoria, AZ, and Gary (Marlene) Houg of Waukon; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a twin sister, Marcella Tayek of Monona; two brothers, Don Sabbann of McGregor; and Robert Sabbann of Brule, WI.

Funeral services were held Sat., Dec. 22, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, with the Rev. Allen Bidne officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Lori Farley, Karla St. John, Holly Nuehring, Brenda Houg, Barbara Houg, Liz Moon, Virginia Houg, and Lulese Houg.

Pallbearers were Wade Houg, Scott Houg, Mark Farley, Steve St. John, Eric Houg, Mitch McKee, Chris Houg, Barry Houg, and Randy Moon.

Organist was Mrs. Judy Walter. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of services.
