Tillman Thompson

Funeral services for Tillman Thompson were held Tuesday September 22, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder, Iowa. The Rev. Marshall E. Hahn officiated. Corrine Landsgard was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Tillman Jerald Thompson, the second child of Thore and Olive (Gunderson) Thompson, was born October 15, 1912 on a farm near Wadena, Iowa. He passed away as the result of Lou Gehrig's Disease on Friday, September 18, 1998, in the Northgate Care Center at Waukon, Iowa. He had reached the age of 85 years, 11 months, and three days.

He was baptized November 17, 1912, and confirmed December 4, 1927, both in the Highland Lutheran church, rural Elgin, Iowa.

Tillman was graduated from the Wadena High School. On June 15, 1944, he was married to Maie Gulsvig in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder by the Rev. Victor Fiskerbeck. To this union two children were born. Tillman and Maie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994. They had lived for over 60 years on their present farm in Marion Township, north of Gunder. Tillman suffered from arthritis and retired from farming in the mid-1960's. He became a resident of Northgate Care Center on August 25, 1998.

He loved sports and attended local ball games as well as watching them on television. He especially liked baseball and was a Chicago Cubs fan. Tillman also liked to play cards. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Tillman was a member of the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder where he had served as a Deacon, Trustee, and President of the Council.

He is survived by his wife, Maie, a daughter, Rebecca and husband, Jeff Laughlin of Downingtown, PA, a son, Jerald Thompson of Postville, IA, five grandchildren, Kate, Jill, Tim, and Jonathan Laughlin, and Anne Thompson, five brothers, Orvan Thompson and wife Bessie, of Houston, TX, Floyd Thompson and wife Lavanda, of Wadena, IA, Glen Thompson and wife, Violet, of Springfield, MO, Earl Thompson of Seal Beach, CA, Torvad Thompson and wife, Eleanor, of Waterloo, IA, and a sister, Evelyn Rogness, of Hills, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Susan, who died in infancy, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Laughlin.
