Mabel Wilhemina Zurcher, 91, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a long illness.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader. Pastor Andrea Mericle officiating. Burial was in the East Side Cemetery, Elkader.

She was born on June 15, 1915, in rural Volga, to Louis and Emma (Volquardts) Miller. Mabel graduated from Elkader High School.

In 1941, she married Harry Schriver in Chicago. Harry died in 1960, and in 1966, Mabel married Glen Zurcher at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Glen died in 1989.

Mabel managed the Ben Franklin store in Elkader for 25 years. She loved to visit with family and friends and enjoyed flowers. She taught Sunday school for many years and was also a White Shrine member.

Survivors include her daughter, Verda Palas, Farmersburg; three grandsons: Jerel Palas, Farmersburg; Jerome (Alice) Palas, Cedar Falls, and Jeff (Sharon) Palas, Ballwin, Mo.; six great-grand children, four nephews, John (Leta) Miller, Dubuque; Chuck (Dale) Miller, Goodland, Minn.; Gary (Shirley) Miller, Pengilly, Minn.; Mark (M'Lou Brubaker) Goodland, Minn., and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands; a sister, Helen Huckstadt; a brother, Gus Miller; a son-in-law, Gerald Palas, grandson Bennett Palas and granddaughter-in-law, Rosina Palas.

Casket bearers were John Miller, Chuck Miller, Gary Miller and Mark Miller.
