Selma Sarah Elisa Schaub, 94, of Elkader, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at teh Guttenberg Care Center, following a long illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, with Rev. Andrea Mericle officiating. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Center. Friends could call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader, and after 1 p.m., Saturday at the church.

She was born July 23, 1912, on the family farm in Read Township, Clayton County, to George and Ellen (Buckman) Taake. Selma was educated at the Read Township Country School and graduated from Elkader High School in 1932. She was baptized Aug. 25, 1912, by Rev. Burkhard and confirmed April 1, 1928, at Frieden's Evangelical Church, Elkader, by Rev. Franke.

On Nov. 27, 1940, she was united in marriage to Albert Schaub at Evangelical Reformed Frieden Church, Elkader, by Rev. Kitterer. They lived on a farm in Boardman Township until 1942, when they purchased and moved to the Read Township family farm. To this union, a daughter, Anita Ellen, was born on Nov. 25, 1943. Selma was preceded in death by her husband in September of 1969.

Selma continued to live on the family farm with her daughter, son-in-law and family until 1994, when she was involved in a car accident leaving her wheelchair bound. She resided at the Guttenberg Care Center until she was able to return home. Following this, she had cancer surgery in 2000, and moved to Scenic Acres Residential Facility, St. Olaf, where she remained until August, 2004. Due to declining health, she returned to the Guttenberg Care Center where she remained until her death.

Selma and her husband began working outside the family farm by selling Amway, McKay Nursery and Avon. Following her husband's death, she worked as a dishwasher at Patrick's Cafe; from 1971-1975 she worked at the Clayton County Home as a resident attendant, and from 1975-1981, worked in the laundry department at the Clayton County Care Facility.

She centered her life on her family and her "adopted families." Selma loved gardening, doing craft work, music, entertaining, and playing games with "all the kids." She actively followed the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. She was an organizer of the Readlander Club in Read Township and a member of Deborah Circle of Peace Church, Elkader.

Survivors include her daughter, Anita Moon of Elkader; two grandchildren, Bret Moon, Luana and Annette (Larry) Frey, Postville; two great-granddaughters, Emily Kameryn and Katelyn Bradee; sister-in-law, Sylvia Schaub, Guttenberg, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Selma was preceded in death by her husband, parents, step-mother Charlotte, son-in-law, Terry in 1997; great-grandson Brady Cameron Frey in infancy; sister and brother-in-law, Pearl and Ray Marmann; brothers-in-law William and Elmer Schaub; sister-in-law Malinda Reyerson and several nephews.

Music for the funeral was provided by Laura Moser, organist, and Jeff West, soloist.

Casket bearers were Ray Marmann, Fred Schaub, Lorraine Tauke, Karl Leete, Ervin Kruse, and Ed Uriell. Honorary casket bearers were Mildred Hoffman, Marlene Heuer, Arlene Bauer.
