Services Held For Mrs. J. W. Truman

Gertrude Kenzy Truman passed away at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville on Friday, June 30, at the age of 85 years, four months and 26 days. She had been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Oliver Eno at Luana when she was taken ill.

She was born on a farm near Garber, Iowa, February 4, 1876, the daughter of Magdalena and Jacob Kenzy. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Ceres, Iowa. When she was nine years old, her mother died and she went to live with an aunt, Mrs. Lou VonBerg, at Luana, where she attended grade and high school.

She received her college education at Upper Iowa University and then followed her chosen profession as a teacher in Iowa and later in South Dakota. She was an early pioneer of South Dakota having gone there with her father in the late 90's. They homesteaded near Iona, South Dakota.

March 28, 1900 she was married to J. W. Truman of Iona, formerly of Luana. They lived on a farm near Iona for a number of years, then moved to a ranch on Bull Creek where they resided until 1929 when they moved to Oacoma, South Dakota. Later they moved to Chamberlain where her husband passed away August 27, 1946. Since then she has made her home with the children.

One son, Evrand, of Chester, Iowa, and one grandson, preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, (Helen) Mrs. Oliver Eno of Luana, and (Lillian) Mrs. L. A. Fosness of Onida, South Dakota, four sons, Louis of Fort Thompson, South Dakota, William of Pasadena, California, and George and Dale of Sunland, California. Besides her immediate family , she leaves one brother, George Kenzy of Iona, 20 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

She was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Onida.

Services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Chamberlain, Saturday, July 8, 2:00 p.m., with interment beside her husband in Riverview cemetery of that city.
