Service Held For Walter Torkelson

Funeral services were held for Walter Buddy Torkelson Thursday, December 5, 1991 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. Pastor Terry D. Hudson officiated. Burial was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona was in charge of the services.

Walter Buddy Torkelson was born May 24, 1918, in Ossian, Iowa, to parents Alfred and Minnie (Schweinefus) Torkelson. He was baptized July 2, 1918 and confirmed in May of 1933 at the Stavanger Lutheran Church, Ossian. He received his education in Dover 7 country school near Ossian.

Walter served in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1945, serving in Europe during World War II. On September 6, 1944 he was united in marriage to Barbara Byrd in Dursley, Gloucestershire, England. To this union five children were born. Walter farmed near Ossian and Monona for many years. He moved to Monona and worked for the city of Monona for 18 years.

Walter died Monday, December 2, 1991, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Preceding him in death were his parents, daughter, Barbara Jane, son, Michael John and brother, Art.

Surviving is his wife, Barbara; son, David of Monona; daughters, Janet Staff and Mary Ball of Monona; nine grandchildren, Mike, Jane and Mark Staff, Scott, Mindy, Kristie and Nicholas Torkelson, Anthony Meyer and LeeAllen Ball and five sisters, Inez Chensvold of West Union, Florence Schrandt, Evelyn Staska and Irene Klisart of Ossian and Marge Lenth of Frankville.
