Maie Thompson

Funeral services for Maie Thompson were held Friday, March 25, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder. The Reverend Marshall E. Hahn officiated. Special music was provided by organist Deb. Reierson and soloist, Tara Moore. Casket Bearers were: Daryl Landsgard, Richard Bente, Larry Olson, Kevin Torkelson, Bob Fassbinder, Dave Farmer. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Maie (Gulsvig) Thompson was born November 1, 1915, on the family farm near Gunder in Clayton County, southeast of Postville, Iowa, to Emil Gulsvig and Emma (Wettleson) Gulsvig. She passed away Monday, March 21, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 89 years, 4 months, and 20 days.

She was baptized December 25, 1915 and confirmed on November 28, 1929 in the Marion Lutheran Church by the Reverend S. J. Strandjord.

Maie was graduated from the Elkader High School, attended the Junior College at Elkader and also Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in the rural schools of Clayton County.

On June 15, 1944 Maie was married to Tillman Jerald Thompson in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder by the Reverend Victor Fiskerbeck. To this union three children were born. Tillman and Maie had lived for over 60 years on their present farm in Marion Township, north of Gunder. Maie became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on January 28, 2003.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Tillman, who died September 18, 1998, a daughter, Susan, a granddaughter, Stephanie Laughlin, a brother, Almer Gulsvig, a sister, Ethel, who died in infancy, and a brother-in-law, the Reverend Victor Fiskerbeck.

Surviving is a son, Jerald Thompson, Postville, a daughter, Rebecca (Jeff) Laughlin, Downingtown, PA, five grandchildren, Kate, Jill, Tim, and Jonathan Laughlin, and Anne (Michael) Thompson Hedrick, two great grandchildren, Angela Laughlin and John Austin Hedrick, and a sister, Violet Fiskerbeck, Rochester, MN.

Maie was a member of the Marion Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA, serving as president of the women’s organization and teaching Sunday School. She was also a member of the Home Garden Club. Maie enjoyed playing cards with her friends and loved to travel. One of her favorite hobbies was working with ceramics.
