John W. "Jack" Bissell

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. October 01 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, IA with
interment in the Monona City Cemetery, Monona, IA, with military honors. Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, IA,in charge of arrangements.

John W. “Jack” Bissell, 74, Monona, Iowa, died in his home on Friday, September 28, 2007, after a battle with cancer. Jack was born on September 30, 1932, at Turkey River, Iowa, to James and Elsie (Homman) Bissell. He was baptized on October 23, 1954, and confirmed on March 25, 1956, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa. Jack graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1952.

Jack served in the United States Air Force from February 28, 1952, to February 29, 1956. He was united in marriage to Gale Kurth on November 10, 1953, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa. To this union eight children were born. Jack worked in construction for Hans Peterson and Ivan Melcher before he started Bissell Construction. Jack loved to go hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, watching sports on T.V. and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Gale Bissell, Monona; six children, Jerry (Darlene) Bissell, Postville, Cindy (Danny) Hertrampf, Cassville, WI, Marty (Robin) Bissell, Monona, Wendy Gress, Monona, Kristy Meier, Anamosa and Mary Bissell, Monona; eighteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathleen Bente, Elkader, Marie Lowell, Guttenberg, Hulda Honn, Longmont, CO and two daughters-in-law, Diane Bissell, Guttenberg and Tori Bissell, Monona.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elsie Bissell; two sons, John Bissell Jr. and Bradley Allen Bissell; two grandsons, Jeremy and Bradley John Bissell and five siblings, Nadine Beldon, August Bissell, Royce Bissell, Jean Tuecke and Kay Williamson.
