RACHEL LEHEW, 97, DIES

Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel LeHew, 97, were held May 15 at Washington Street Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, Ind., with the Rev. Steve Burris officiating. Burial was in Floral Park Cemetery there.

Pallbearers were Earl Beard, Charles Moore, Dan Coats, Arthur Lynch, August Bischoff, and Polly Haltom, all of Indianapolis.

Mrs. LeHew dead Wed., May 12, 1976 at Memorial Hospital, Praire du Chien after an illness of several weeks. She had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Otto Fascher, Farmersburg for the past six years.

A prayer service was conducted Thursday evening, May 13 at Schultz Funereal Home in Monona, by Pastor K. E. Hanson of St. John’s of Farmersburg.

Mrs. LeHew, the former Rachel Ellen Douglas, was born in McGregor Oct 19, 1878. She grew up and went to school here and worked several years at the North Iowa Times.

She was married in 1902 at the home of her parents, Mr.& Mrs. George S. Douglas, to Orley James LeHew.

For 27 years, she lived in Indianapolis, where she served in many capacities at the Washington Street Presbyterian Church, including as a Sunday School teacher, a deacon, devotional leader of the Women’s Association, and was once named “Woman of the Year.”

As a member of the Little Red Door, a cancer society, she was recognized for contributing more than 1,000 hours of service. She also belonged to the White Guild, helping to supply medical needs to the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She had also at various times made her home in St. Paul, Rice Lake, Beaver Dam and Madison, Wis., and Allamakee and Clayton Counties.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1955; a son Lloyd, in 1946; two daughters in infancy; and four brothers.

Surviving are four daughters: Mmes. Duane (Harriet) Merten, Radcliff, Ky., Otto (Ardee) Fascher, Farmersburg; John (Almeda) Boardman, Monona, and Robert (Ethel Ellen) Atkinson, Fortville, Ind.; and four sons, Noble B. of Orangevale, Callif., Sidney D. of Daytona Beach, Fla., Robert O. of Rockford, and Ralph B. of Indianapolis.

Also surviving are 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters. Mrs. Ethel Beck, Dongola, Ill. And Mrs Dorothy Senksen, Clinton; and a brother, Ervie Douglas, formerly of McGregor and now a resident of the Lutheran Home, Strawberry Point.
