Clayton County Register, Thur., 17 July 1930. Elkport column.

Mrs. Mary Wittman, nee Moser, was born in the state of Ohio, in March 1856. In infancy she was received into the fellowship of the Triune God through holy baptism and thereby made a child and heir of God. After being duly instructed she was confirmed in the year 1908, December 20th, and her memorial text on that day was Phillippians 4, 6, "Be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplications with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." With this word of God she was sent into the world as a witness of the truth, of which she remained true until the end.

She was united in holy wedlock to John Wittman, November 19, 1888, and to this union 11 children were born, all of which live to mourn her passing. The deceased was preceded in death by her husband, he passing away March 03, 1929, leaving her with the children to mourn him. The deceased made her home in Garber, until her health failed. Then she was with her children, who, according to the fourth commandment, tried to fulfill the same and return some of the love shown to them, to her. Mrs. Wittman was in failing health for some time. She was unable to attend the hours of worship but the church was brought to her, with words of comfort, prayers, and the Holy Communion, which she received only the day before her passing, being thus strengthened, she was prepared to be delivered from this "vale of tears to be received into the arms of her Saviour.

The deceased leaves to mourn her departure eleven children: Louis Wittman, William Wittman and Henry Wittman, Lake Lillian, Minnesota; Mrs. Lena Gill, St Paul, Minn., Fred Wittman, Clayton, Ia., Alfred Wittman, Garber, Iowa, Andrew Wittman, Garber, Iowa, Mrs. Emma Rodas, Garber, Iowa, Mrs. Anna Costigan, Elkport, Iowa, Mrs. Lester Schnack, Elkader, Iowa, John Wittman, West Haven, Iowa; She also leaves six brothers: Andy, Fred, Louis, William and Henry Moser, all of Osterdock, Iowa, and John of West Bend, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Friedlein, Osterdock, Iowa, Mrs. Emma Hansel, Manchester, Iowa, and Mrs. Liza Andregg, West Bend, Iowa; 32 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She reached the age of 74 years, four months. She passed away July 08, 1930, at 6 a.m.
