W. J. Payne, 61, Succumbs to Heart Attack

Wilbur Jay Payne, 61, well-known Register and Tribune farm service supervisor in this area, passed away Thursday morning following a heart attack. He had been a patient at St. Ann hospital since a week ago Monday. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock in St. Cecelia's church, the Rev. P. P. Gearen officiating. Interment was in Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers were D. Reynolds, Ira Kohl, D. Dewel, Joe Harig, Robert LaBarre and James Bieser.

Mr. Payne was born February 24, 1891, at Giard, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Payne. He came to Algona in 1921. In 1925, he joined the field staff of the Des Moines Register & Tribune Company. At the time of his death he was district supervisor of the farm service department. Mr. Payne was also a member of the Register's 25-year club. Although handicapped by his hearing, Mr. Payne carried on his business in a plesant and successful fashion and was held in high esteem.

Mr. Payne married Marie Barbaras in June 14, 1914, at Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Mrs. Payne, along with four daughters, survives. The children are: Alice, Mrs. Clyde Ridenour, Rochester, Minnesota; Eleanor, Mrs. Lee Seeberger, Fort Dodge; Ruth, Mrs. James Boyd, Fort Lewis, Washington; and Norma, Mrs. Jess Reynolds, Germany.

Also surviving are two brothers and a sister: George L. Payne, Mason City; Mrs. Carl Buer, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Eugene Payne, Florida.

Hamilton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
