Helen Dorothea (Dolly) Hazlett Wirkler, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Garnavillo, died Monday, April 11, 2005, after an extended illness. Her body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Cedar Memorial was in charge of arrangements. There was no visitation.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment in the Garnavillo City Cemetery.
Dorothea was born Nov. 21, 1917 in rural Monona, the daughter of George Whittaker and Fanny Mae Hazlett. After graduating from the Monona High School, she attended Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She was an elementary school teacher for six years.
On Oct. 16, 1942, she married Merle J. Wirkler of Garnavillo in Oelwein.Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter; two brothers, Irwin and twin William, and three sisters, Wilma Gilbert, Merlie Henkes and Jane Coffman.
Survivors include her daughter, Toni Jo Clow and husband Donald; two grandchildren, Tanya Clow-Fleckenstein and Nathan Clow; one sister, Frances Fuelling, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be given to the Nature Conservancy in Dorothea's name.
