Vera Louise Freitag
Funeral services for Vera Louisa Freitag, 87, were held Wednesday, January 17, 1996, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Rev. Lance Bentley officated the service with burial in East Side Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dick Zittergruen, Bob Walke, John Nagel, Bill Zittergruen, Norbert Butikofer and Roger Breitsprecher.
Vera Louise Freitag, daughter of Albert and Ella (Hoth) Breitsprecher, was born on the family farm near Clayton Centre, Iowa, on January 17, 1908. She was raised and educated in the area attending country school. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. She was united in marriage to Glendor Freitag on September 25, 1929. Three children were born to this union. Together they farmed in the Elkader area for many years. Upon retirement they moved into Elkader. Glendor died May 27, 1975. Vera was a longtime member of Peace United Church of Christ and the Deborah Circle where she enjoyed taking an active role. She was also a 50-year member of Royal Neighbors. Since September of 1993 Vera has resided in the Elkader Care Center, where she died Monday morning January 15, 1996.
Survivors include her son Ivan and his wife Phyllis Freitag of Elkader, two daughters, Vergean Schmidt an her husband Carl of Farmersburg, and Marilyn Unruh of Cedar Rapids, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Ervin Breitsprecher.
