Herman Emil Appel

Funeral services for Herman Emil Appel were held Thursday, April 21 at Schultz's Funeral Home in Monona. Rev. Harold O. Ward officiated. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of arrangements.

Herman Emil Appel was born November 24, 1902 in Monona, Iowa, to parents Joseph and Mathilda Carlson Appel. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona. He received his education in the Monona school.

Herman worked for local farmers in the Monona area for several years. He operated City Service Station and DX station in Monona and drove an Iowa oil tank truck.

September 5, 1948 he married Evelyn Gauper Knutson in Monona. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois where Herman worked as a painter for University Club of Chicago. In 1964 Herman retired. They moved to McGregor in 1966 and lived there at present.

Herman died Tuesday, April 19, 1988 at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Charlotte Sass Appel, who died Jan. 8, 1936; 2 sons, Roger Appel and Paul Knutson; 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Surviving is his wife, Evelyn, 4 sons, Richard Appel, White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Fred Appel, Niles, Illinois, Carl Knutson, Vernon Hills, Illinois and Earl Knutson, Chicago, Illinois; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Dennis Appel, Lorraine Lenth, Donald, Jerome, Ronald and Robert Sass.
